Germany is a land of paradoxes for thoughtful Jewish travelers. Long before the Holocaust, it was a seat of Jewish learning, home to 11th-century Biblical sage Rashi and philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. And, today, it is home to more than 120,000 Jews, of which 40,000+ are in Berlin. Berlin is a city haunted by its past which you will discover as you see the myriad of memorials and museums; notice the residences of Holocaust-era Jews, which are marked by engraved brass stones called solpersteine, and at the railway station from which the Jewish community was dispatched to the death camps. You will meet with members of the re-established Jewish community, who are mainly immigrants from Russia and Israel and discover the lure of Berlin for returning Jews.
And, as you walk around the city, you will get acquainted with dynamic, modern Berlin, including familiar places such as the Brandenberg Gate, Reichstag and a walk along Unter den Linden. Enjoy a walk through Cold War history at Checkpoint Charlie and along a remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall, which has been turned into an outdoor art gallery.
